Intensive Counselling Courses: What They Involve and Whether They Are Right for You

Intensive counselling courses deliver the same qualification as a standard-length course over a shorter period. At CPCAB Level 2, the standard format runs over approximately 30 lessons spread across an academic year. An intensive format covers the same content and meets the same qualification requirements in around 18 lessons, typically condensed into a shorter timeframe.
The qualification is the same. The pace is different. Whether that pace suits you depends on your circumstances, learning style, and what you want from the training.
What an Intensive Counselling Course Actually Involves
An intensive course is not a shortcut. It is the same material, the same skills practice, and the same assessments. What changes is the frequency of sessions and the speed at which material is introduced.
The demands of an intensive course are higher in the short term:
Sessions are more frequent, leaving less time between each lesson to process and integrate what was covered
Assignments and reflective writing come around faster
Personal development work, which takes time and reflection, is compressed into a shorter window
For some students, this pace works well. They prefer concentrated learning over a shorter period and manage the increased workload without it affecting quality. For others, the standard pace allows for deeper integration of the personal development work the course requires.
Who Benefits From an Intensive Counselling Course
An intensive format tends to suit people who:
Already have some background in counselling, helping work, or personal development and are building on an existing foundation
Have practical constraints that make a standard-length course difficult to commit to
Prefer intensive study and can manage the increased pace without it affecting the quality of their engagement
Are progressing to Level 3 and want to reduce the overall timeline of their training
What an Intensive Course Cannot Do
An intensive counselling course cannot bypass the personal development process. Counselling training is not primarily an information download. It asks students to examine their own patterns, assumptions, and history alongside developing their skills.
That examination takes time. It takes sitting with things. Compression is possible; elimination is not.
An intensive Level 2 also does not accelerate the pathway to qualification. Level 3 and Level 4 follow regardless of whether Level 2 was completed in a standard or intensive format. The timeline to practice as a qualified counsellor from the beginning of training remains approximately four years.
Intensive Courses at The School of Counselling
The School of Counselling offers Level 2 in both standard (30 lessons) and intensive (18 lessons) formats, delivered live via Zoom. Both formats lead to the same CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills. Both include the same skills practice, the same assessment requirements, and the same tutor and cohort experience. The difference is pace, not depth.
If you are unsure which format is right for you, attending an open day is the most useful first step. It gives you direct experience of the learning environment and a chance to discuss your circumstances with the team.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an intensive counselling course?
An intensive counselling course delivers the same qualification as a standard-length course over a shorter period. At Level 2, the intensive format runs over approximately 18 lessons rather than 30. The qualification, assessment requirements, and learning content are identical. The difference is the pace and frequency of sessions.
Is an intensive counselling course as good as a standard course?
The qualification is the same. Whether the format suits a particular student depends on their learning style, prior experience, and circumstances. Students with some background in helping work or personal development often manage the intensive pace well. Students who are entirely new to this kind of learning sometimes find the standard pace allows for deeper integration of the personal development work.
Does an intensive Level 2 shorten the overall path to qualifying as a counsellor?
Slightly, in that Level 2 is completed sooner and Level 3 can begin earlier. However, the overall pathway through Level 3 and Level 4 to qualification remains approximately four years from the start of training. An intensive Level 2 brings the beginning of Level 3 forward, but does not shorten Level 3 or Level 4.
