CPCAB Level 3 is the Certificate in Counselling Studies. It is the second stage of the CPCAB qualification pathway and the theoretical foundation for professional counselling training.
The School of Counselling offers a pathway from early beginnings as a curious learner all the way to qualified counsellor. They have a range of trusted counselling qualifications that match a learners needs and availability.
Where Level 2 focuses on the practical skills of helping, Level 3 focuses on the thinking behind the work. Students study the major counselling models, human development, diversity and difference, and the ethical and professional framework that governs counselling practice in the UK.
Completing Level 3 is the standard requirement before progressing to Level 4, the diploma that qualifies you to practise as a counsellor.
What CPCAB Level 3 Covers
Level 3 is structured around several core areas of study.
Counselling theories and models. Students explore the main theoretical approaches used in counselling practice in the UK. This includes the person-centred approach developed by Carl Rogers, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic theory, and integrative approaches. Students develop an understanding of what each model proposes about how people change and what helps them.
Human development. Students study how people develop across the lifespan, including attachment theory, developmental stages, and the impact of early experience on adult psychology and relationships.
Diversity and difference. Students explore how factors including culture, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, class, and religion shape a person's experience and how counsellors need to engage with difference thoughtfully and without assumption.
Ethics and professional practice. Students study the ethical framework that governs counselling in the UK, including the BACP Ethical Framework, issues of confidentiality, professional boundaries, and the responsibilities of a practitioner.
Self-awareness and personal development. As at Level 2, students continue to develop their understanding of themselves and how their own history, values, and assumptions affect their work.
Research and evidence. Students are introduced to how research informs counselling practice and how to engage critically with evidence about what works in therapy.
Who Level 3 Is For
Level 3 is for people who have completed CPCAB Level 2 or an equivalent counselling skills qualification and are committed to pursuing counselling as a profession.
It is also relevant for people working in helping roles who want a deeper theoretical understanding of counselling without necessarily progressing to Level 4 immediately.
Some students complete Level 3 and take time before starting Level 4, for personal or practical reasons. This is common. The qualification does not expire, and Level 4 providers will accept Level 3 as the prerequisite regardless of how much time has passed.
How Level 3 Is Assessed
Assessment at Level 3 is largely written and reflective. Students complete assignments that demonstrate their understanding of the theoretical content and their ability to apply it to practice.
Assessment typically includes:
Written assignments on the major theoretical models and their application to counselling work.
Reflective practice journals or portfolios exploring personal development and self-awareness.
Case studies or applied writing that connects theory to the helping relationship.
There is no final examination. Assessment is continuous and reflects development across the course.
How Long Does CPCAB Level 3 Take?
CPCAB Level 3 typically runs over one academic year. Some providers offer an intensive format over a shorter period.
At The School of Counselling, Level 3 is delivered live online via Zoom, with both standard and intensive options available.
What Comes After Level 3
The natural progression from Level 3 is CPCAB Level 4, the Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling.
Level 4 is the qualification to practise. Students complete a supervised placement with real clients, accumulate required client hours, and are assessed across all areas of counselling competence. Graduates of Level 4 are eligible to apply for BACP membership and to practise as counsellors.
Some students also go on to CPCAB Level 5 or Level 6, which cover psychotherapeutic counselling and supervision respectively.
The Difference Between Level 2 and Level 3
Level 2 and Level 3 are distinct stages with different purposes.
Level 2 is skills-based. Students develop the practical abilities of a helper: listening, reflecting, paraphrasing, working within boundaries. The focus is on what you do in a helping conversation.
Level 3 is theory-based. Students develop the intellectual framework behind the work: why certain approaches help, how people change, what the research says, how ethics governs practice. The focus is on understanding the field you are entering.
Both are required before Level 4. They work together to produce a trainee who can both practise the skills and understand the theory that informs them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is CPCAB Level 3?
CPCAB Level 3 is the Certificate in Counselling Studies. It is the theoretical stage of the CPCAB qualification pathway, covering counselling models, human development, diversity, ethics, and professional practice. It follows Level 2 and prepares students for Level 4, the diploma that qualifies them to practise as counsellors.
Do you need Level 2 before doing Level 3?
Yes. CPCAB Level 3 requires completion of Level 2 or an equivalent counselling skills qualification. The skills developed at Level 2 form the foundation that Level 3 theory builds on. Most training providers will ask for evidence of Level 2 completion before accepting a Level 3 application.
How long does CPCAB Level 3 take?
Typically one academic year in a standard format. Some providers offer an intensive version over a shorter period. At The School of Counselling, Level 3 is delivered live via Zoom over approximately 30 sessions.
What is the difference between CPCAB Level 2 and Level 3?
Level 2 develops practical counselling skills in a helping context. Level 3 develops the theoretical understanding behind those skills: counselling models, human development, diversity, and ethics. Level 2 focuses on what you do. Level 3 focuses on why it works and the framework that governs it.
Can you work as a counsellor after completing Level 3?
No. Level 3 is a theoretical qualification and does not qualify someone to practise as a counsellor. To practise, you need to complete Level 4, which includes a supervised placement with real clients.
Is CPCAB Level 3 recognised by BACP?
CPCAB is an Ofqual-regulated awarding body. CPCAB Level 3 is a nationally recognised qualification that forms part of the pathway to BACP membership. Level 3 alone does not qualify for BACP membership. That requires completion of Level 4.
The School of Counselling offers CPCAB-accredited online counselling courses at Level 2, Level 3, and onsite Level 4.
