The Certificate in Counselling Skills is the CPCAB Level 2 qualification and the standard entry point for counselling training in the UK. It introduces the core skills used in counselling, the values and ethics that underpin the work, and gives students their first structured experience of helping practice.

It is designed for people with no prior counselling qualifications. No degree, no previous training, and no experience in a formal helping role are required to begin.

What the Certificate in Counselling Skills Covers

The course develops competence across six core areas.

  1. Establishing a helping relationship. Students learn how to set up a helping conversation with clarity and care, including contracting around confidentiality, the purpose of the session, and what both parties can expect.

  2. Using core counselling skills. Listening, reflecting, paraphrasing, asking open questions, sitting with silence, and communicating empathy are all practised and assessed across the course.

  3. Working within ethical boundaries. Students explore the ethical framework governing counselling practice, what confidentiality means, when and how to break it, and what limits of competence involve in practice.

  4. Understanding the helping relationship. Students examine what makes a counselling or helping relationship distinct from ordinary supportive conversation, including the role of boundaries and professional accountability.

  5. Developing self-awareness. Students are supported to recognise how their own history, values, and assumptions affect their work as helpers. This is not incidental to the training. It is central to it.

  6. Working within limits of proficiency. Students learn to identify when a concern exceeds their training and to enable the helpee to find appropriate additional support.

Who the Certificate in Counselling Skills Is For

The Certificate in Counselling Skills is designed as a starting point. It suits people who are new to counselling and want to explore the work before committing to a full diploma. It also suits people working in roles where counselling skills are directly useful, teaching, nursing, social work, management, pastoral care, HR, and many others.

Some people complete Level 2 and move straight into Level 3. Others take time between levels for personal or practical reasons.

How the Certificate in Counselling Skills Is Assessed

Assessment is continuous and portfolio-based throughout the course. There is no final examination.

Students are assessed through reflective writing, which documents their learning and personal development across the course. They are also assessed through observed practice sessions where their use of counselling skills is evaluated directly. Written assignments address the theoretical content and ask students to connect learning to their developing practice.

External verification by CPCAB ensures the standard is consistent across all approved providers.

How Long It Takes

The standard Certificate in Counselling Skills runs over approximately 30 lessons. An intensive format is available over a shorter period.

At The School of Counselling, Level 2 is delivered live online via Zoom in standard and intensive. All sessions are real-time with a qualified tutor and a cohort of fellow students.

Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies follows. This is the theoretical stage, covering counselling models, human development, diversity and difference, and the professional ethics framework in depth.
