Online counselling courses in the UK range from short self-paced introductions to fully accredited diploma-level programmes that qualify you to practise. The difference between them is significant and worth understanding before you commit.

Not All Online Counselling Courses Are the Same

The term online counselling course covers a wide range of provision. At one end are free or low-cost self-paced modules that introduce counselling concepts through pre-recorded videos and written materials. At the other end are Ofqual-regulated qualifications delivered live via video, assessed by external verifiers, and recognised by professional bodies such as BACP.

These are not versions of the same thing. They have different purposes, different standards, and different outcomes. A self-paced online course cannot lead to a nationally recognised counselling qualification. A live, accredited online course can. The distinction matters if your goal is to practise as a counsellor.

What Accredited Online Counselling Courses Involve

An accredited online counselling course, at Level 2 or above, involves live sessions delivered via video platform with a qualified tutor and a cohort of fellow students. Sessions are scheduled at fixed times. You attend in real time. You practise counselling skills with peers. You receive feedback from a qualified tutor. You submit assessed work across the duration of the course.

This is not correspondence learning. It is live relational training conducted through a different medium. CPCAB, the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body, is the main Ofqual-regulated awarding body for counselling qualifications in the UK. CPCAB-approved online courses meet the same qualification standards as in-person programmes and lead to the same nationally recognised credentials.

The CPCAB Online Qualification Pathway

The standard route into counselling practice via online study follows three stages.

Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills. The entry point. No prior qualifications required. Students develop core listening and helping skills, explore the ethical framework, and begin the self-awareness work that runs through all levels of training. Approximately 30 lessons delivered live via Zoom.

Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies. The theoretical foundation. Students study the major counselling models, human development, diversity and difference, and the professional ethics framework in depth. Approximately one academic year.

Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. The qualifying diploma. Students complete a supervised placement with real clients alongside the taught programme. Level 4 at The School of Counselling combines online sessions with in-person residential weekends. Approximately two years.

Online vs In-Person: What the Research Shows

The concern that online training is inferior to in-person training is common and understandable. It also does not reflect how live online counselling training actually works.

The relational element of counselling training, practising skills with peers, receiving feedback in real time, experiencing the group dynamics of a learning cohort, is fully present in live online delivery. Students consistently report that the skills transfer well and that the online environment does not diminish the relational depth of the learning.

What does matter is the distinction between live and pre-recorded. Live is the critical factor, not the medium.

What to Ask Before Enrolling

Are sessions live or pre-recorded? Live means real-time interaction with a tutor and peers. Pre-recorded means watching videos independently. Only live sessions develop the relational skills counselling requires.

Does the course lead to an Ofqual-regulated qualification? CPCAB qualifications are Ofqual-regulated and nationally recognised. Courses that do not lead to a regulated qualification are not equivalent, regardless of how they are marketed.

Is the provider approved by the awarding body? CPCAB approves providers to deliver its qualifications. Check that the provider you are considering holds current CPCAB approval.

Is there a live cohort? Training alongside other people is not incidental to counselling training. It is part of what the training is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are online counselling courses accredited in the UK?

Yes. CPCAB-approved online counselling courses delivered live via Zoom are Ofqual-regulated and nationally recognised. They lead to the same qualifications as in-person programmes and meet the training requirements for BACP membership. Not all online courses are accredited. Check that the course leads to an Ofqual-regulated qualification from a recognised awarding body.

Can you do a counselling course entirely online in the UK?

Levels 2 and 3 of the CPCAB pathway are fully deliverable online via live Zoom sessions. Level 4 typically combines online delivery with some in-person elements, including residential weekends, to meet the requirements of the clinical placement component.

Is online counselling training recognised by BACP?

CPCAB Level 4 is recognised by BACP for membership purposes. The Level 4 Diploma is delivered in person onsite with some lesson delivered online. The BACP doesn't recognise a Level 4 Diploma that is delivered 100% online.

What is the difference between an accredited online counselling course and a free online course?

An accredited course leads to an Ofqual-regulated qualification, is assessed by external verifiers, and meets the training requirements for professional body membership. A free online course introduces counselling concepts but does not lead to a recognised qualification and cannot be used toward BACP membership or a counselling placement.

The School of Counselling is a CPCAB-approved training provider offering Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4 counselling courses.
