You study the CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills online through live Zoom lessons, with a tutor and a small cohort, and you receive the same qualification as a classroom student. The course carries 90 guided learning hours plus around 80 hours of self-study, and you need no previous training to start. At The School of Counselling, Level 2 runs over 18 weeks in the intensive format or 30 weeks in the standard format.

What the Course Covers

Level 2 is the skills stage of the CPCAB route. You learn to listen, paraphrase, reflect feelings, summarise and ask open questions. You practise holding silence without rushing to fill it. You also learn where the helping role starts and stops: confidentiality, boundaries, and when to refer someone on.

Self-awareness runs through every lesson. You look at how your own history and assumptions shape the way you hear other people. Tutors build this work in gradually, alongside the skills practice, and you set the pace of what you share.

The course leads to an Ofqual-regulated qualification awarded by CPCAB. Assessment is continuous, and there is no exam. Your tutor assesses short written pieces after lessons, typically 300 to 400 words, along with the evidence you show in skills practice and group discussion.

How Online Lessons Work

Every lesson is live. You log in at a fixed time, see your tutor and your cohort on screen, and work together in real time. The difference between live teaching and distance learning matters more in counselling than in most subjects. Recorded videos and self-paced modules leave out the live practice at the centre of skills training.

Skills practice happens in breakout rooms. You work in pairs and small groups, taking turns to listen, to talk about something real from your own life, and to observe and give feedback. Your tutor moves between rooms. The whole group then comes back together to reflect on what happened.

You need a laptop or desktop with a webcam and microphone, a stable internet connection, and a private room where nobody overhears you. The last point matters. Students share personal material in skills practice, and confidentiality applies to the room you sit in as well as to the group.

Groups at The School of Counselling are capped at 12 students. A small cohort gives you more airtime and lets your tutor follow your progress closely.

Intensive or Standard: Choosing Your Pace

The School of Counselling runs Level 2 in two formats. The intensive course takes 18 weeks, with one full teaching day each week from 9.30am to 3pm, and costs £1,995. The standard course takes 30 weeks, with lessons in the morning, the evening or on a Saturday, and costs £1,495. UK fees include VAT.

Both formats lead to the same qualification. The intensive suits you if you protect one weekday and want to reach Level 3 sooner. The standard suits you if you work full time or have caring commitments and want more space between lessons. For a fuller breakdown of what the fee covers, read our guide to Level 2 course costs.

Attendance counts. At The School of Counselling, you need to attend at least 85% of lessons. Pick the format you will turn up to every week, not the one you hope to squeeze in.

Entry Requirements

Level 2 is built for beginners. You need to be 18 or over and hold GCSE English at grade 4 (C) or an equivalent. You also attend a short informal interview before you start. No degree, psychology background or counselling experience is needed.

The interview is a conversation, not a test. You talk about what draws you to counselling, and the school checks the course fits where you are right now. If you do not hold GCSE English, get in touch to discuss alternatives.

What Comes After Level 2

Level 2 on its own does not qualify you to practise as a counsellor. The next step is the CPCAB Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies, which builds the theory behind the skills. Read our guide to the Level 3 counselling course online for how the next stage works. Around 95% of Level 2 students at The School of Counselling progress to Level 3.

After Level 3 comes the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, the qualification to practise. Level 2 still has value if you stop there. The skills change how you listen at work and at home, and some students in teaching, healthcare and management take Level 2 for this reason alone.
